If I understand it correctly, the newer BMWs use AGM batteries, which can be charged rapidly by intelligent alternators which disengage during acceleration, and are activated by braking to charge the batteries, thereby enhancing overall performance. The system constantly monitors battery health. Not surprising that there might be a malfunction in such a sophisticated system.
