Should at least do 70 miles in real life and 100 miles on paper.

For startrers, that 20-mile battery-only range is enough for people to get around emissions taxes in congested cities (like London, for example). Tool around the city on electric power, then switch to petrol when outside the city limits.
I'm encouraged to see the 5-series getting PHEV treatment, and am holding out hope they introduce this capability on the G11/G12 7-series when it debuts next year. Even if the range is only 20 miles, it'd be enough to get me from my garage to the onramp of the highway for my commute to work, then offramp to garage during my drive home. My existing car returns abysmal MPG on the "garage to highway" portion of my daily commute. Once I'm on the highway, I get great MPG.
