Quick update, I still get the 'no signal' screen when I enter other countries so it seems that something needs to be updated for each country individually or it can only work in one country at the time. I've chosen automatic region so that shouldn't be the issue. It is working as expected in my home country where the dealer initially fixed the issue once the car was imported from Germany.
