PS3's graphics are vastly superior to those on the 360 if the developer actually tries and makes a dedicated PS3 version of a game due to the PS3's hardware being better, otherwise they look about the same.
If it's your only console, I'd get a Wii but you say you like sports games so I'd get a 360 for better online + more people have them. Plus then you can use the "it's the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market and we need an HD disc player" to convince the wife to let you buy a PS3.
