If it's your only console, I'd get a Wii but you say you like sports games so I'd get a 360 for better online + more people have them. Plus then you can use the "it's the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market and we need an HD disc player" to convince the wife to let you buy a PS3.
and that is where you are wrong. the ps3's processor might be better, but its gpu gets reamed by the 360's. the 360 has 512mb of shared RAM and 10 mb of EDRAM, where as the PS3's gpu is locked at 256mb. Also, the complexity of the PS3 chip makes it next to impossible for developers get any real significant gains.

to the OP: its ultimately personal preference. go read reviews on ign.com of games that came out on 360 and PS3. Particularly, sports titles, all have looked better on the 360. Couple that with the superior online and you have a playing experience second to none.

The PS3 however is enticing due to the blue ray player. While you can go get one for that alone, rumours have it that IBM is developing digital downloading formats that use photons of light which will let you download hd movies in a matter of seconds or minutes. If you want your hd movie fix now, grab a PS3, if not hold off for 2 years until IBM's technology gets marketed for mainstream use.
