Only 4 times in my life have I ever run out of gas. Twice I was right near a gas station, so quickly clutch in and coast in to the pumps. The other 2 times my gas sending unit had broken, and BMW wanted me to bring the car in with as little gas as possible. Each time I was about a mile short in my guestimate to get it to the dealer.

Still seems like a lot.
I've never run out of gas, and I've driven vehicles that got 9 mpg. My sister on the other hand is 27, and from 16 has run out of gas 4 times, got 5 flat tires, has been towed 4 times, and broke a wheel.
