I just went through this. Bought a 2018 540xi from BMW dealer with 60k kms about 4 months ago. 4 year / 40,000km warranty from BMW Canada (2nd party) was offered at $8,000 + tax (=$9,000). I decided to pass as I don't think the odds of it paying off were high at that price. Around $5,000 I probably would have taken it.
I intend on probably keeping the car forever, especially if things continue in the electric direction.
