Up to you how much you care about it but in terms of protection , I find wax is up to job.
It obviously can't protect against dings or stone chips or scratches by objects though.
I follow the same methodology. The original paint finish is developed to withstand years of exposure to the elements and a coat of wax or 2 a year is all it needs. Can't see how a "ceramic" finish will help reduce stone chips, Xpel should.
If one lives in a very sunny, high UV area and the car exposed day on day, then a bit of extra waxing will help maintain the shine long term.
