i've been watching a lot of bat videos... the prime spots for roosting are pretty basic- warm enough, high enough, secure from predators (thin walled area), and water within a mile or two. other than that, they don't really care about people nearby.
so if one of those things is not right, they just keep looking.
one of the interesting things is bats can not "take off" in flight. they have to fall about three feet to get air under their wings and start flapping. if they fall to the ground or have a weird obstruction, they pass on that roosting spot. they have to climb back up to fall from something to try to fly again, and they are very susceptible to predators on the ground.
