Actually, US diesel is usually cheaper than premium, which is required in NA petrol engines. Typically its about 5% more expensive in the US per gallon for premium and at least 30% less efficient. The huge difference in cost is always spoken of in reverse - that diesel is more expensive - since people don't compare it to premium but to regular grade gasoline. They also don't do the math regarding the fuel economy difference.
