If the a door is opened without disabling the alarm with the remote control, it WILL set off the alarm (on both my 2002 E46 and new E90 - we're talkng the alarm fitted as standard in the UK). Tha alarm is silenced by inserting the key in the ignition, by the chip in the key.

I had to use the key twice with my E46. Once when thr remote would not work due to a radio transmitter at a motorway service area. Other brands of car nearby were having the same problem. The alarm activated for the few seconds it took to open the door and slot in the key.

Once at my airfield, I was separated from my remote (1km away at the other end of the main runway). I used the emergency flat key in the door lock and transferred that to the ignition within a few seconds - again the alarm sounded for those few seconds. Doing this in the E90 is likely to take much longer as you have to find the emergency keyholder shell, insert the key into the holder and then insert that into the deshboard slot.
