I’m sorry I didn’t take a pic, but just to be clear: the rust was not on the rotors themselves. After a simple test drive, rotor rust will go away. The rust was on the wheel hub.
It’s bothersome to me because my M340i, driven in winter and with over 14k miles, doesn’t have this problem.

I don't think you are talking about hubs. You can't even see the hub unless you get under the car or take the wheel and rotor off. The rotor has the flat disc that the brake pads squeeze, but it also has a "hat" - the big center part that goes over your hub. I assume you are just saying the rotor hats are rusty?
