Did you ever get a resolution to your problem?
My M550, that I just picked up on July 5th, started doing this every 10 minutes or so. It just started this week on Monday. I called my local BMW Genius and she suggested doing a reset of the iDrive by holding down the volume button for 60 seconds, and to not let go until it comes back again. Tried that and it still did it.
Hopefully it gets sorted out because it's really annoying.
