Yes, you should just wait for the logbook / V5C - it's the quickest way in reality.
The other way to do it is to send the V5C/2 green slip with the retention document (V778) and a V62 form (application for a vehicle registration certificate). However, that process also takes time and you can only put the plate on once your V5 comes back showing the new reg.
Sadly there isn't a way any longer to assign a cherished reg to a used vehicle immediately (it used to be doable when the DVLA had the local vehicle registration offices).
