I've had tire blowouts, nails and screws in the sidewall that can't be repaired, a truck with a flat where I could not get the spare off of the truck (the AAA couldn't and the tire shop couldn't either) and the aforementioned broken valve stem which fortunately happened about 2 miles from the tire store on my way home.

But all of my cars have been models where your local tire store/WallyWorld is not going to stock their OE size tires, especially in RFT. So any catastrophic failure is going to cause a multi-day delay. That's why I want a real spare.
Therein lies the rub. The road trips we take where a flat is (remotely) possible is where I can't afford the loss of trunk space. The spare takes up the equivalent of a suitcase. I keep threatening my wife that I'll buy a trailer and tow it on trips so she can bring all the clothes she thinks she needs! That, or rent a motorhome!
