A neighbour scratched my car but he covered the costs - I think it was a mistake for me to ring the insurance company back then as I also had this incident left as "open" claim and the insurer included that in the no claims bonus letter which in turn caused issues when I moved insurers.

I my view they use anything as an excuse to "adjust" the premiums but the suggestion really is to use your best criteria and report incidents you may need the insurance company to cover/get involved.
