My understanding was that map updates were free via OTA whenever they automatically get sent through (4 x times a year apparently), alternatively what I did was download them and manually update them via a 64gb usb stick in the car (takes 15 mins or so).
Not sure why anyone is being charged for this - the process I followed was login via the ConnectedDrive portal, click on the Remote Cockpit button, the next screen should have three options along the top of the page, Status / Control / Map, click on "Control"
Scroll down the next page and midway down is "Map Update" with a button that takes you to a download site where you can select manual download for either Windows or Mac.
Follow the instructions......BTW the download takes a good amount of time!
