Biggest thing I would say is use a company that has been around in your area for awhile, and will be able to stand behind any warranty issues.
Replacing old single pane windows from the early 70s in my house in Calgary did make the house noticeably more even and comfortable temp wise in the winter, and our bills did go down a bit.
The larger things were, there was a very noticeable external noise reduction, and as mentioned, the rooms felt more even and consistent in temperature, and we didn't have ice buildup on the inside of the windows any longer. As well, many of the old windows were difficult to operate, and at least 2 had broken either a pane, or hardware/ handles, which is what prompted us to get them replaced.
