But, otherwise, I think you said what I was thinking (and should have said). The ///M cars are just the top end of the regular 2/3/4/5-series cars with the M-Sport package as a default option. There's no real M in them.

Trey, you are right, there is definitely a distinction between M-sport and real M (brakes is a good example). I think the "M-performance" range of cars has adopted a full range of small upgrades to give a more satisfying feel and feedback, whilst never approaching what defines a true M car. I drove M3 some years ago and am too old for that kind of excitement now, which is why I didn't wait for the M5.....
