At least here in Finland it makes sense to buy a plug-in hybrid because of the CO2 based purchase tax, for a 530e it's about 3% (2000 eur) when for a 540i xDrive it's 30% (25000 eur) for the base models, you also pay the same tax on all factory options.
Another reason is that you can do 100% of your work commute on electric power if you don't have a long commute. Charging at home is easy if you live in a detached house.
Third reason is the pre-cooling ja pre-heating function of the hybrid.
More range would be nice, but even the new Audi A6 plug-in has only 25 mile range.
