Thanks, Dave. So it seems common sense (and common courtesy) is the rule. The chickadee shot was done in daylight and the bird appeared unaffected, continuing to eat after the shot. It was also low power. I wouldn't use the flash at night. Better to avoid even temporarily putting the bird in danger.
