just my opinion, but it's good to remember that Schumacher retired from racing at the end of the 2006 season. he came out of retirement after Mercedes made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
why would Mercedes do that? i think because Michael Schumacher could accelerate the development of a Formula 1 car faster and more effectively than any driver ever.
while his race results at Mercedes were certainly less than spectacular, i never thought that was why he was hired.
