This is a prime example of why the gesture control is more of a cool, gimmick to show your friends or kids than an actual efficient tool to use in everyday life.
I, too, don't always get it right, but when I do, I've noticed I touch my pointer finger and thumb together (makes a circle), and then drag my hand towards the right (or left if that's the direction you want to see) in a slow fashion.
In terms of height, with your elbow on the arm rest, just lift your arm up to a 45* angle while keeping your elbow on the arm rest. And then proceed with the above description.
