I am trying to find out the cheapest valid alternative to replacing the kidney grills with new ones as I read that it is not easy to take them down and put them back.

as a matter of fact, this is what I did on my original grill and the result is shown in the top image I posted here in the opening post
In my case the grill was satin silver (it's an hybrid edrive) and I plasti dipped it with black paint. I didn't bother removing the grill and just taped everything nicely and sprayed it while still on the car. After a year still shows like new
I could also now try to plasti dip the remaining chrome surroundings but I think it would show nicer if it would be high gloss black instead of matt black from plasti dip.
