BMW is in the business of diversifying their model lineup as much as possible, and doing the exact opposite with their engines. Engine R&D is the majority of the expense that comes with running a car business. So you want to reduce how much money you invest in engine development, and spread that cost across as many different products as possible to offset the R&D spend.
It worked beautifully for Nissan, who for many years essentially had 4 engines for their lineup of dozens and dozens of cars (Skyline notwithstanding). The days of a bespoke engine for an ///M car are over.
