So after a couple of unreplied to emails I had a helpful call with bmw UK last week, they accepted there was a problem and that my car should have one or both update methods (USB/OTA) but the chap didn't know which.
Today went on to check and both services are booked until 2020 with Europe Evo 2018-1 available to download!
So for anyone else with the same issue, it took a single phone call to fix!
Off to find a large USB drive now...
