Guilty as charged. My car is a she is all that jazz.

I think it is borne out of that natural human desire to personify things and things have have been personified are more natural for us to attach human characteristics and emotions toward. We can love our car because we've given it a name and a personality of some kind.

Not too much unlike our doing the same for non-human living things. We haven't given a name or personality to the chicken at the store so we don't feel negative emotions for consuming it, but the same for our pets would invoke a deep and painful emotional response akin to the loss of a human loved one.

Not needed for all of us, of course, but needed for some of us. Me included. Ironically, since I'm usually not one for emotions.
