The problem I see (and with the earlier models) is not so much the space saver losing a bit of trunk space, although that is a compromise when carrying a trunk full of luggage. It is the issue if you need to use the spare, have to put a full size wheel in the trunk space to continue a journey.
Wheels are big these days (particularly the rear staggered wheel), and a problem with a loaded trunk. Run-flats still make a lot of sense for simplicity of use.
