Ugh, what a heavy thing for those kids to have to grapple with. A teachable moment, I suppose. An opportunity to talk about the cycles of life.

It was inevitable, after all. When choosing a pet you should mind it's lifespan. In particular, don't die before it does unless you have someone you can trust to take it over.

Children will have to learn there's no joy without sorrow: what would be happiness if there were no unhappiness? It's inevitable too.
