Not entirely true. Previous vehicles could be upgraded from CIC to NBT, ID4 to 5/6, etc. The dealer would never do it though, it would need to be done individually or through a third party.
The biggest difference for ID7 though is that it is integrated with the Instrument cluster as well, so you would most likely have to swap both at the same time, and that could get very pricey.
