This is correct. Applies to all non-M BMW's. The sport mode from the button and the shifter to the left are different things. There is some overlap in behaviour but they are not activating the same exact changes.
Easy to test - put your car in sport+, maintain a steady speed and revs. Push the shifter to the left, watch the revs increase as the gearbox shifts down. Push the shifter back to normal position and watch the gearbox change up again.
