Well, after doing some math, it's not true. The number of manual 3 series dropped significantly with the E9x chassis.
BMW built ~141,000 manual E36s and ~144,000 manual E46s, but only ~86,000 E9x. E30 is at 240,000 cars with a manual transmission.
The numbers do no include M3s
