I agree with others... RAID 1 if you have less than 2 tb of photos you want to back up. Otherwise RAID 5 or 6 if you need a more space.
If you want something with a longer shelf life that holds a lot of data (relative to cds/dvds), then get an internal blu-ray burner and some dual-layer BD media which holds up to ~50 gb per disc.
