Promise I'm not a mod in disguise! I just didnt really know where to post this. Reddit is a hit or miss but I figured car-inclined people would have better insight into this realm of things.

Thanks everyone for this advice! I'm going to try and pursue this legally for the time being and just keep it parked behind my new house. I really really doubt that this person would try to come back and screw me over, we were really good friends and I think this is just a really odd situation - again, no skin off my back if you really think about it.

Just kind of inconvenient, but hey - I may score a free car out of it. So we'll see. I'll update this thread when something develops.
