Well currently in the US:

550i xdrive = $68,600 starting (445 horsepower, just doesn't have all the M badges)
M5 = $94,100

So $25,500 difference!

I am guessing the M550i will start around $70K still since the Audi S6 starts at $70,900 (2017 model, 450 horsepower with AWD), BMW is aiming for the S6 I think after it embarrassed the last generation 550i
But with options the M550i xdrive will be pretty much the same price as a M3 fully loaded, and it looks like their 0-60 times will be about the same. M550i = more practicle just as fast in everyday driving (in fact in lots of conditions it will be faster due to AWD), but won't be as fun to drive and won't be as fast on a track.
BMW is giving me lots of options when I trade in my M3 in 2-3 years, for $75K you will be able to get a M3/M4, X3M/X4M, or M550i xdrive, some may hate that the later are even being made but I love it.
$25,000 is a big enough difference for many to opt for 550 then. Still surprised the difference in Europe is so little though. Then again -- at least in holland -- it's more like double that anyway
