I drove BMW 5ers since the early-80s, but my last two cars have been Audis (an S4 and now an S6). My switch was because BMW executed xDrive primarily for foul weather traction. Audi engineered Quattro primarily for its handling characteristics, with foul weather traction as an ancillary benefit. Take a closer look at Audi's S cars. Their suspension is dropped (they don't sit higher like xDrive). Most important, the optional sport diff splits torque not just front-to-back, but also side-to-side. The impact on the cars' handling characteristics is amazing.
btw, I still consider myself a BMW guy and am dying to get back into the brand. I keep lurking in these forums in hopes that BMW throws the towel in and copies Quattro. The 540ix looks good, but the M550 may
(may) actually pull it off. My fingers are crossed.
