Requesting production changes to special-order cars

As we all know, some important production status codes are 111 - Order accepted at AG; 112 - Order scheduled for production; and 150 - Production started. It is commonly said that changes may be made to an ordered vehicle until the car reaches status code 150.

Our Alpina B6 was given status code 111 at the beginning of March. We then decided we would prefer a different exterior color, so I contacted the dealer to request the change. Neither color is an added-cost color. The car is still at status code 111 as of today. However, the dealer was unsure whether the change could be made, allegedly because Alpinas are special-order cars. I suppose I could speculate wildly as to why that would be the case, but I was wondering if anyone knows the real reason why such a change could not be made at such an early time.
