To some degree, yes but the reality is, and I think this was mentioned in previous threads, the entire development cycle does not allow manufacturers to throughly study the competition. BMW can anticipate what its competition will do mainly based on trends but I don't think they can mimic and come out with a car that throughly trumps its competition just because it was released x years after. The W213 will be on the market for about a year by the time the 5er is released but that doesn't mean the 5er would have had a year to make it better than the E-Class. The 5er would have been finalized and ready for production even before then with any changes to be minor but I don't think time would allow them to make any significant changes in features in that time span.
To summarise: Production model and design for BMW 5er would have been locked in well before the Merc E was released to public. Companies don't have the time to copy. It is purely trend based design.
