You mean until 1988, not 1998 (the m10 was last placed in the e30 platform afaik). and actually an m54 engine shows more in common with the m10 than for example the s54 from the e46 m3 partswise. I think the m54 is the last engine that actually shares exact physical parts and some dimentions with the m10. But not much, I think 1 or 2 bearing shells; most is analog to the m20. That engine probably had even more models used in its offspring (the s54 is ovbiously a direct decendant; every bmw i6 up to ~2005 shares loads of parts (mainly in the bottom end) and design features with the m20)
