I found it pretty accurate and use it occasionally depending on the position of the steering wheel and my arm. I would suggest you give it a try just using your index (no hand movement) finger when your elbow is on the arm rest. Doing it slowly even lets you adjust the volume in small steps.
I also find it useful for rejecting and accepting calls.

It's still easier to use the button on the steering wheel. 0% failure rate!

The only real use for gestures control is showing off feature to friends and my son can change volume from passenger seat. Otherwise I agree steering wheel controls or volume knob is a lot easier. Maybe ignoring a phone call is useful but haven't tried that yet.
