I'm seeking help with the problem, not unhelpful hot takes.

If you must know, the shifter in the 2018-19 M550 is the same generic shifter that exists across the BMW product line. It's unworthy, IMHO.

For me, the M5 shifter completely transforms the interior, and based on the YouTube I linked to, I had no reason to suspect any functionality would be lost (beyond shift point on the M).
