Sorry lads, I don’t know really anything about cars, I always wanted a BMW and have saved up for 8 years to finally buy a used F10.

The car was driving perfectly for the last 2 months, last week it started making some screeching sound sometimes but would go away.

Recently the sound has changed to a more whooshing sound when driving slow and scratching too. When I hit a bumpy surface the metal rattles like it’s loose.

Is this a threat to the road safety of the car? And is it possible to remove this thing temporarily and still drive safely? It’s a thin piece of metal seems to be for catching debris or something, doesn’t look super complex.

That's your brake dust shield. It's scratching your wheel. It should not be contacting anything.

Thanks for the info, would it be okay to remove this until I can replace it? I’m a little worried about it breaking and a sharp piece taking out my tires on the motorway

Just figure out why it's contacting the wheel. If you get a replacement one, and the underlying issue isn't fixed, you're back at square one.

You didn't state what wheel it is, or what F10 you have, but I guessed.

If you jump to the following link, you'll see the front dust shield as item #3. If your dust shield is touching your wheel, it's probably missing at least 3 of the 4 bolts (Item 4).

Access to either the front or rear dust shield requires, removal of your wheel, removal of your brake caliper carrier, and removal of your brake rotor.

IMHO, if you are going to go this far, you might as well put the bolts back in...rather than remove the plate.

The specifics for the car is: BMW 5 Series 520D F10 SE 4DR, 2011, 2.0.
