My iPhone is in silent mode, but the car rings and interrupts the radio. I searched the idrive menus and forums, but can't figure how to put the incoming calls into silent mode.

Go to your iPhone's call setting during a call and change the audio from CarPlay (or Bluetooth if you don't use CarPlay) to iPhone which will stay that way until you come back to the vehicle and it rejoins.
