Advice on a high mileage 5 series!
Hi All,
I was looking for a bit of advice. My brother in law is considering this high mile G30 is a lovely spec (520d XDrive, M-Sport, Technology Pack,M Sport Pack), but it got 84k miles on it and going for £19k. Is this a bad idea and is there anything to look out for? Or should I advise him to avoid it? Thanks :-) |

Too many miles for me regardless of price. When you get to 80-100k miles, you need to start replacing stuff. Control arms, bushings, etc. There will also be the usual BMW failures like coolant system failure and Guibo cracking. The money you save from the high miles will drain your pocket dry. I guess if he is a DIY kind of guy maybe or if it were a rare car that may hold it's value or appreciate like an M5 (relatively in 10-15 years) , but I am not sure I would take the risk for a 520d.

The number of miles aren't the problem IMO, it's the type of miles. 84k motorway miles will mean that car has had an incredibly easy life. 84k city miles means it'll be ready for the crusher.
If you can find out more about it's history, and how we'll it has been serviced (inc. proactive and break-fix items it may have needed) you should get a good feel for how safe this is. I bought my previous F10 with higher miles than I'd like on this logic, it was a motorway cruiser and it's condition reflected that easy life. |

Personally I'd walk away from that. Company car so probably not looked after like a personal possession.
No doubt service according to manufacturers specs but as I say used as a tool. I'd save up more money and go for a lower mileage one , if you are after a 520d there will be plenty of them out there |

In EU we have cars with more than 200k km and work fine if they are well maintained. Obviously it is preferable to buy a lower mileage car but if the price is an issue right now you can go for it. Like the other colleagues explained there will be things to replace sooner than in a lower mileage car but that is just normal. |

I have 75k miles on my G30 of which 35k of those miles are mine. Both the previous owner and I mainly put on highway miles. I'd estimate the car has done ~80% highway with the other ~20% being mixed local roads and mountain/canyon roads. It's mainly chill on the highways, but I do drive it quite hard/aggressive on the backroads
I had the left headlight replaced under warranty due to the DRL LED burning out and causing some damage to the light strips for the DRL (not replaceable on its own). Other than that, no issues other than multiple oil changes and single transmission fluid, transfer box fluid, front and rear differential fluid changes, all of which were DIY. She's also heavily modded, pretty much FBO with Stage 2+ engine tune making ~450+ WHP and xHP Stage 3 transmission tune for ~30k of those miles. I also retrofitted F90 M5 Competition brakes and full suspension with KW V3 coilovers. Overall, I think G30 is a relatively reliable platform with the B58 engine being the most reliable of the bunch. B48 also seems to be reliable. I'm not super confident with the N63, but it looks like the later variants used in the M550i are much better than the earlier variants which exhibited a myriad of issues. I can't say too much about the diesel variants, since we don't get much of those in the US. If your buddy is relatively handy, then I say go for it. They're not too hard to work on sans the electronics which can be tamed if you have access to ISTA/E-Sys.
