BMWs and water don't mix

Not sure if some people are brave - or brain dead. OK if you've got the right vehicle I suppose.

It appears BMWs do not like water and most needed a tow away. Think I read somewhere the intake is quite low down.

These people are insane. How much further is the alternative route…

The air intake on the F3x is on the RHS of the right kidney grille when looking from the front, I believe, so if you push water through the grille then you’re fooked.

The speed of approach of most of this lot is crazy- they drive through the bow wave they have created, so even if they would have just got through with water beneath the grille, they won’t that way.

Looked it up and its only about 2 miles to avoid that ford.

This one has a 435d (I think) at the start. Cannot believe they are trying to tow it while its still in gear, its painful watching it.

Totalled engine and possibly damaged gearbox. Very expensive fix......

Living up here, where we have a few Fords, I looked up what the handbook says...

deactivate stop/start - only drive through still water - only drive through water to max depth 25cm (the depth here is about 30/40 cm, judging by the measure board) - drive through at walking pace.

Which is pretty much the same as we were taught all those years ago...

Watching the video, I am sure the VW about 7.20 in floats across...

Painful to watch. This video ought to be sent to M engineering team with a request to design an official M Performance snorkel.

Braindead, some proper special cases among that lot. Was hoping that at some of the speeds being travelled they'd end up stacking it into the bridge.

All those hydro-locked engines. What an expensive journey through the water - to save 2 miles, if I saw correctly in one of the posts.

I don't think it helps that it's the local entertainment, I can imagine all those watching will take the piss if you turn around, some will feel under pressure, especially if the car in front got through.

It's sad that people will stand there filming for hours(they are still there when the recovery trucks arrive) rather than help people by telling them there's a high percentage chance its going to be a very expensive day for them.

I thought exactly the same. The video says more about the villagers than the drivers.

I also think it says more about people than BMWs. I'm honestly struggling to understand some people's thought process and decision making. The water is clearly way too high for anyone in car to be doing safely.

There's a good chance that the people getting caught out are not locals, see the signs for the Ford and assume its safe to drive through. Probably not aware of the affect of the rain etc. I would think some better warning signs are needed if this is a regular occurrence.

However, even off roading you should be aware of depths before wading, and then its advisable to have a fan you can switch off as I found out to my detriment when a stick and cooling fan disagreed leading to a cooked V8!

I don't think it's that high (not that I'd be risking it), it's just that most of these bellends believe that gunning it is the way to go. There's a white Merc in the second clip that takes it properly and has no issues - water level is lower than the front grill.

The mentality has got to be 'the less time it's in the water, the better' instead of what it should be - 'where's my air intake!?'

The warning signs are prominent as is the depth marker, unless you're a fucking idiot, as most of the drivers in these clips appear to be. It's just down the road from my dad but I'd only go that way in the summer.

I guess if it's stalled in Drive then neither the helpful chappy towing or the driver know how to put the car into neutral in an emergency - you can't simply move the lever.

Seriously if you try and drive through that you deserve what you get. Surely the red five series driver must have thought this isn't going to end well when a duck swam in front of him at what must have been almost eye level!

If it's high enough that you've got to get the speed "just right" then it's not something that can be done with much safety margin, and when the risk/reward is skewed as it is, then to me that says don't do it.

Seems a lot of those that decide to go full speed through it have no concept of what damage water can do on the underside of a car when pushed through every crevice at high speed - regardless of whether their engine is still going at the other end.

The villagers have a fine collection of front number plates as well.
And the odd front bumper!

tbh I wouldn't have known before I joined this forum that water damage to engine was a thing and probably would have done what they did. Watching thousands of pounds of damage unfold is painful and not the right thing.
