Telescopic steering wheel noise

My steering wheel makes a groaning noise when it reaches its highest neutral position, only intermittently tho. No other noises when adjusting, only when it reaches most highest point. Is this common for a g30? I’ve seen forums on the x5s making this noise but not much for the g30.

Is it sticking at all? Or sound like it’s struggling to get to that spot? Because that’s definitely a known issue. I had the column eventually replaced under warranty on the 540. Looking like the X7 will need the same. So I’m just waiting for the day the M550 starts doing the same thing. Seems to especially be correlated with heat, but not always.

I have a 2017 bmw 540i which has a steering auto tilt on exit and entry feature which makes a grinding motor sound. I have an aftermarket warranty and took it to BMW and they diagnosed it as a steering column issue but the warranty company stated they do not cover although my coverage list the following coverage under steering:

STEERING: Housing/case and all internally lubricated parts (examples include rack and pinion equipped valve assembly, sector shaft, rack mounts and cushions, inner rod ends and bellows boots, speed sensor or steering gear equipped pitman shaft and valve assembly and bearings), bushings, pitman arm, center link, idler arm, power steering pump/electric steering motor, power steering pump pulley, fluid reservoir, coupling, and fasteners for the components listed above.

Can the steering motor also be referred to as steering column? is it all in one unit because the contract say it covers steering motor?

No. The steering motor is on the rack (AFAIK). You're problem is the steering COLUMN and BMW have an SIB that states to replace the column. Eventually, the column will no longer raise or lower. I checked and column replacement is about $4800! I just coded-out the easy entry/exit and the steering wheel is stationary. I do plan on having my local Indy take the column apart and regrease it. They said they do that a lot on MB's. BMW won't regrease the assembly.

They’ve regreased mine on 2-3 different vehicles. If you’re under warranty, it’s the first fix before they will do the replacement.

My dealer regreased mine (allegedly) "off the books" with no guarantee it would work. It did... for about two days. They said officially regreasing wasn't an option and replacement was the only option. My car was out of warranty by a couple thousand miles and a couple of months.

I had this issue as well in my m550 that's out of warranty. Like others, I just disabled the easy entry while the wheel was in the preferred position. Never been an issue since, and honestly doesn't seem any more difficult to enter/exit the car.
