Is it possible to call 911 via the button in my BMW? (not roadside assistance)

(911 as in the nearest local 911 center or police/fire dispatch)

Isn’t there a law that requires ALL cellular devices to be able to reach 911 no matter what?

Probably easier to just have 911 as a contact on your mobile and call it when you need. If mobile is connected to the car you should be able to call from the car menu.

It is (should be ). But indirectly: just as the article referenced says, the operator is supposed to connect with the "official" emergency services like the police if necessary (if you just ask as well ).

And by the way, it should be the safest just to call and find out if they are available (of course they are when you don't need them ) and what they can do for you. Stay in touch! But not too intrusively: hampering the service is no good (see the article again).

Another note. The button (I don't have it ) should be properly packed. A sign "Open the cover and press the button in case of emergency." and a note "In case of EMERGENCY, you fool! Not now!!!" underneath the cap (if you open it out of curiosity).
