Should I straight pipe??

I have a 2019 540i, and I have a friend with the same car. My friend removed the mufflers and resonators, basically a straight pipe, but kept his cats because of legal stuff. I know many people find straight pipes obnoxious, but I'm not in the financial position to get a whole new exhaust system, and I think his actually sounds pretty nice and it's not super droney or annoying IMO. My only issue is that I got an extended warranty from BMW, and from what I understand from asking them, any changes to my exhaust system, other than tips, will void my warranty, but from what I've read online, it shouldn't.

My warranty also still has 35,000 km on it, so I don't really wanna wait that out.

What do you guys think? Any advice is welcome.

BMW Warranty --- they should know what is in it. Get a second opinion. Do you have a second BMW dealer you can ask?

Yeah im going to a different dealer soon because its closer to me for an oil change, so ill ask while I'm there. Ive read through my warranty agreement, and it doesn't really specify what modifications are allowed; it's quite vague.

Removing mufflers and resonators will drone like crazy, so absolutely not.

I thought that too, but my friend did it to his and it actually sounds nice, no annoying drone, not too loud when the valves are closed, loud enough when the valves are open. it completely surprised me, I wasn't even considering it until I heard it and drove it.

There's only one valve, on the right side. The exhaust is a rather large single pipe back to the single muffler.

Ugh, to each his own, but there is no way that will not be obnoxious, but I guess obnoxious is subjective, but I would venture to guess 90% of the people hearing it will be laughing at you and shaking their head and mumbling "there goes that look at me guy again".

It will drone like a motherfucker and if you can't hear it on your friends car, then I am guessing you like drone, probably for the same reasons.

Sorry for the strong words, just trying to talk some sense into you. Act like you own a BMW or just get a Honda and rice it out, it will be more fitting.

In terms of warranty, I am guessing you have an after market warranty because there is no way a 2019 is still under CPO, which would be fine with it except if you had an exhaust issue then that obviously won't cover a chopped up Frankenstein system. Now a third party will use ANYTHING to get out of a claim.

Come to your senses.

Look, I completely agree that obnoxiously loud cars make people look like idiots who want people to just look at them, I just completely can't cover a whole exhaust system atm, and the car is just so quiet stock that when I want to drive it on back roads and just listen to the engine, I cant, this would be only a temporary fix for a year or 2 until I can buy one, but I would get it done at a credible exhaust shop, no frankenmods. my biggest concern about this (other than warranty) is looking like an absolute asshat with a riced bimmer, but I cant get over how quiet the car is rn, even at 5-7k rpm it doesn't give me the feeling I'm looking for. If any other suggestions are available, they are welcome, just nothing super expensive (over $800 CAD/~$570 USD).

Also, yes, I have a third-party extended warranty, but it was done through the BMW dealership. I think they have a contract or some sort of affiliation.

Seriously, tho, I can't stress how surprisingly not drone-filled my friend's exhaust is. I'll get a video next time I see him and post it on this thread.
I am not someone who likes annoyingly loud cars that are just loud for the sake of being loud.

Fair enough.

On the warranty, an aftermarket warranty sold by the dealer has no more dealer influence on claims than buying it from a credit union. They make you feel like it when they are pitching it, but it's all about commissions and sales. They have to call the claim in and get approval from the underwriter just like any other warranty and an adjuster has to approve. It does not matter one bit that the dealer sold it.

I have had an aftermarket tune and exhaust since I was under BMW factory warranty and then two years of CPO. The dealer could have cared less, they complimented me on it many times.

At the end of the day, it is all subjective. There were parts of this video where I was like, hmmm, that's not too bad, but others where I just know that in person, that sucker will be heard from 5 blocks away. The other thing is videos rarely represent what it actually sounds like in person and I find that videos are usually more conservative than in person, meaning not as loud or exaggerated.

Here is a short clip of mine, it is definitely louder in person, but it is a Dinan system, so it's more of an engineered growl.

I agree, but I've heard it in person and I liked it so I'll keep it as just an option for now. I think I'm gonna go for a valvetronic eventually, if not maybe a Dinan too.

Yours sounds awesome btw, I really like the growl. I had the option to get a 2018 M550i when I bought this car too, but I was worried about maintenance cost and I'm still pretty young so I wanna have space to grow into cooler cars in the future. The 540i is more than enough for my age.

You sound like a good guy. Apologies for coming on strong, I definitely profiled you. The next BMW generation to carry the flag right here.

Thanks, it was stupid money and if I am being honest, I did it more the quad tip look than a high motivation for improving the sound. I also wanted to try to stay all Dinan with any mods. My tune is Dinan as well.

Wish you asked here first about the M550, they have been amazingly reliable and cost of ownership isn't really much different than the 540. Two more plugs and two more quarts of oil.

See if you went M550, all you would have to do is delete the resonators and it would come to life

Dont worry about it I can definitely tell how my question made me sound.

Honestly, looking back, I would've loved the 550, but the one I found was also 40000 km more than the 540 for the same price, so if I wanted lower km's, I would've had to pay a lot more. And while I agree the 550 is an insanely cool car that I would love soooo much, I need to get goals one step at a time, climb the car ladder, and I think if I got the 550 now, I would start too high to be able to upgrade after university.

The current goal is to keep the 540 to finish uni, and a few years after that, save up for an M5. (wagon hopefully)

Thanks for the advice tho, ill add you as a friend on here, might come ask some more advice in the future

One of the guys on here recently posted about an exhaust system for very cheap, I think it was Alibaba or something like that.

Just had a quick look & have pasted the thread below
