15-18 mpg on a '19 540i?

Hey everyone, I got my 2019 540i M-Sport RWD recently, and it’s been getting 15-18 mpg. I’ve heard of people with 540s and M340s getting way upwards of 20 mpg, so I’m a little confused. Although to be fair I’ve been driving the car pretty hard and in sport plus for 90% of the time. So I guess I just want to know if that’s the main reason why, and if I start driving it less hard and keep it in eco pro/comfort, would my mpg be that much better? Also just to mention I wanted to know if tires or tire pressure could be a factor, as my rear tires are 245’s (last owner put spacers on so I’m guessing that might be why he put smaller width tires, not sure tbh). Thanks.

Yes it is due to the way you’re driving it.

Try adaptive mode & don’t drive it like your hairs on fire if you wanna see better mileage

i'd expect those figures if its being driven aggressively .
I had a 540 and I know on a gentle motorway drive you can get low 40mpg (Uk) without much effort .

Sounds like you are enjoying it!

My old 2019 540i M Sport RWD with Dinan tune was coded to start in sport individual and I drove it in that mode 95% of the time on a mix of highways and surface streets. Averaged about 22mpg most of the time, neither flogging it nor babying it. So yeah, if you drive aggressively all the time it will drop. Long highway cruising at about 80mph it could get 33mpg+ and didn’t have the mild hybrid system.

Also…what is your average MPH? That will also affect your gas mileage. If you have a low MPH average, this usually correlates with heavy city/urban driving with lots of high RPMs (from taking off) and lots of stop-n-go situations.

The higher your average MPH, the better gas mileage (MPG) you’ll get. Giving your MPG without also giving your MPH is only giving partial info that could indicate what your driving style/condition is.

Ah this all makes sense now after seeing replies. Yes my average MPH is around 18-25 I think as I just drive to school and around town. Thanks for the help 🙏🏽

That’s what I thought, I’ll try it in adaptive and see how it changes. Thanks

Good point about the typical rpm. I usually ran at 3000 or lower in my 540i. Sometimes hitting 4000+. The thing about the B58 is that it really comes alive above 3500rpm but if you’re used to driving it below that you still think it’s a great engine, because it is. In my F30 340i with 6MT I frequently was in the 3-5k rpm range.

15-18 isn't bad at all. EPA is 19 city, and they're over optimistic.

Seems low to me. According to Fuelly, my average is 28.6 for 20k miles. I have it in individual sport mode 100% of the time. Oh, my wife typically gets low 30mpgs if she drives a whole tank.

Again…what is your avg MPH? Go to your OBC info and report back what your average MPH is so that we can compare that to your average MPG.

The OP is doing heavy urban driving…he’s getting between 18-25 average MPH (which is a low average) and tracks the description of his driving to school & around town and also using sport/spolrt+ mode.

If he was able to get into a driving situation where his average MPH increased to 25-35 MPH…he’d see his average MPG increase, too. But that would require a different driving situation where he didn’t have as much stop n go driving and could experience boulevard/parkway driving that had timed lights and didn’t have to stop as much…and where he could go for long distances where he could go longer distances driving between 35-55 MPH. This is how his average MPH could increase…which would in turn increase is average MPG.
