2017 530e only charges 2kWhs - 7 miles range

Hi all,

I know this has probably been asked several times but I’ve just purchased a 530e 2017 plate from a second hand dealership and it charges to only 2kWhs and gives me a real world range of 7ish miles which is less than the 12 the app shows.

I wanted to ask if this was normal for a car this old (53k on the clock) as I’m still within my 30 days of consumer rights act where I can reject the car on the basis that it’s not fit for purpose but only if this is considered more than normal for a car this age.

I do really like the car and would be open to some sort of battery refurb, there are some I’ve found that can do this but not sure of the cost and if it’s worth it.

Currently charging using a 3 pin as that’s what my car came with.

Any help would be appreciated.

The battery is toast

It's a 9.2kwh battery when new, some degradation is surely expected after 8 years but going down to 2kwh is pretty extreme

This is what I thought too. Is there anything I can do about it realistically?

When it’s charging the app tells me at 90% that I have 95% charge that I have 20ish miles of range but as soon as it hits 100% that number drops to 12-13 miles but I’m actually getting around 7

Did you buy from BMW dealer?

Which state are you in?

California has an 8 year warranty on the battery for hybrid, I don't know about the other states

Replacement batteries are like 1000usd per module and there are 5 or 6 modules total

If you can return it under that rule you mentioned in your original post you may consider that if this is a deal breaker

According to this page the BMW battery warranty in the UK is 6Y/60K miles (OP is in the UK).

https://www.bmw.co.uk/en/topics/owne...uidelines.html

In the US, the California HV battery warranty (which applies also to most CARB states) is 10Y/100K miles.

top stuff

OP should probably take it to the dealer to get the battery checked out (they can tell you how much it's deteriorated) and then perhaps go back to dealer with that info if it's really out of the ordinary to try and get some type of deal done

If you get the eFlow electric BMW app and a ODB reader you can pull the battery health stats right from the app. Given what you're listing I would assume the HV is pooched.

This is pretty much the exact scenario when an EV battery is bad. Go look at 1st gen Nissan Leaf battery degradation. The estimations done by the car are all wrong and can't be trusted. The battery has bad cells which may show charge making the car "think" range is higher, then when you drive the voltage starts dropping suddenly which makes the range calculation drop too.
